Shipwreck Cove went up a few feet from Ocean Beach last month. It's a ship-shaped play structure with a crow's nest and slide, sand play, a circular xylophone and seating. It's the first playground Sunset Dunes has had. San Francisco Recreation and Park Department describes it as a 6,000-square-foot pilot dune-education play area with 10 wheelchair-accessible play structures, permitted for one year. The San Francisco Standard reported that Friends of Sunset Dunes raised $800,000 in private donations to build it, that the pilot can be extended, and that "within days, it was full of children."
Much of the park's fall programming now falls in the middle of the week. On November 3, San Francisco votes on whether the Upper Great Highway opens to private cars on exactly those days.
The fall calendar sits mostly on weekdays
The Friends of Sunset Dunes events page lists the October and early November programming. Here it is with the day of the week included:
| Date | Day | Event | Where |
|---|---|---|---|
| Every week | Wednesday, 11 a.m. | Free Chinese community dance, taught in Cantonese | Irving Activity Studio |
| Oct. 15 | Thursday | Symphonic Sunset with the SF Philharmonic | Noriega Sunset Lounge |
| Oct. 16 | Friday | Dune revegetation | Judah |
| Oct. 22 | Thursday | Acoustic Happy Hour | Noriega Sunset Lounge |
| Oct. 24 | Saturday | Dune revegetation | Judah |
| Oct. 25 | Sunday, 1 to 4 p.m. | The Great Hauntway | Judah to Taraval |
| Nov. 1 | Sunday | The 1812 Overture with the SF Philharmonic | Noriega Sunset Lounge |
| Nov. 4 | Wednesday | Acoustic Happy Hour | Noriega Sunset Lounge |
The weekly dance, both Thursday evenings at the Noriega Sunset Lounge and the October 16 replanting all fall between Monday and Friday. So does the November 4 happy hour, held the day after the election. Friends of Sunset Dunes posts these as organizer listings and asks visitors to check for changes before heading out. One recurring chair yoga listing has a "cancelled" tag in its event link, so it's left off the table.
The weekday programming builds on a busy first year. In April 2026, Rec & Park reported more than 1.7 million visits between the park's opening and March 31, 2026. Over the same period, 300 volunteers planted more than 2,200 dune grasses, observers recorded 87 bird species, and the park hosted 20 permitted events. The October 16 and 24 replanting sessions at Judah continue that dune work.
Where each entrance puts you
The park runs from Lincoln Way to Sloat Boulevard, and the amenities are uneven along its length. Here is the Friends of Sunset Dunes visitor guide, from north to south:
- Lincoln. A named entrance, with accessible blue-zone parking nearby. The North Parking Lot sits off the Great Highway between Lincoln Way and Fulton, next to Ocean Beach. A Bay Wheels dock stands at Lincoln Way and La Playa.
- Judah. The best-equipped stop for an unplanned visit. It has an ADA-accessible ramp, public restrooms, a drinking fountain and a Bay Wheels dock. It also hosts the rotating outdoor art exhibition from Friends of Sunset Dunes.
- Noriega. Home of the Noriega Sunset Lounge, where the Thursday music nights happen. It has a Bay Wheels dock and a portable toilet but no permanent restroom.
- Ortega and Quintara. The guide lists Ortega as a bike route. Quintara has a Bay Wheels dock at Lower Great Highway.
- Taraval. An ADA-accessible ramp, a public restroom, a drinking fountain, a Bay Wheels dock, a pickup and drop-off zone, and blue-zone parking nearby.
- Sloat. Public restrooms and the South Parking Lot at Great Highway and Sloat. Rec & Park placed the skate area here, beside the bike pump track and skills course. Its features include a bank, a quarter pipe, an island feature and pieces of upcycled granite. When it announced the skate features in June 2025, Rec & Park called them interim pieces that may be moved or removed as the park changes.
Martin Taylor's "The Giraffes" also stands near Sloat. Big Art Loop describes it as a 16-foot adult giraffe beside an 8-foot young one.
For food on the walk back, Maillards opened a permanent smash-burger counter on Wednesday, April 22. It shares the space at 3821 Noriega St. with the Outer Sunset taproom of Two Pitchers Brewing, according to Eater SF. On Taraval, New Taraval Cafe stayed open after Stanley Lui's last shift on August 15. Mission Local reported that longtime employee and co-owner Orlando Gomez is carrying it forward.
Sunday the 25th: the Great Hauntway
The busiest day this month lands on a weekend. The Great Hauntway runs Sunday, October 25, from 1 to 4 p.m., along the park between Judah and Taraval. It's free, with trick-or-treating, live performers, bounce houses and live music. Friends of Sunset Dunes calls it San Francisco's largest Halloween event.
The Hauntway page says neighborhood parking is limited and asks guests to bike or ride Muni. The N-Judah, the L-Taraval and the 7, 18, 23 and 48 bus lines all serve the event, and there will be bike parking at Judah and Taraval. The N-Judah also runs a little more often now. Mission Local reported that peak-hour service was set to go from one train every 10 minutes to one every nine starting August 29.
For visitors coming from Golden Gate Park, Rec & Park is running a special Golden Gate Shuttle for the day. It picks up at the Blue Heron Lake Boathouse and at Transverse Drive and JFK Drive, and drops off at Judah Street and Lower Great Highway. Neighbors who would rather hand out candy than collect it can sign up as hosts on the same page.
What Prop G covers, day by day
The San Francisco Public Press published a nonpartisan guide to Proposition G. In short, the measure would reopen the Upper Great Highway between Lincoln Way and Sloat Boulevard to private vehicles on weekdays. Cars would stay off the road from 6 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Monday and on holidays. A simple-majority yes vote allows weekday driving. A no vote keeps Sunset Dunes closed to private vehicles at all times.
Laid against the table above, the measure's hours line up this way. The Hauntway on Sunday the 25th and the November 1 orchestra concert both fall inside the protected weekend window. The Wednesday dance, the Thursday evenings at Noriega and the November 4 happy hour all fall on weekdays.
Each side's case, as the Public Press reported it:
- Supporters say full closure puts an undue burden on nearby residents and has increased traffic injuries in Sunset neighborhoods. They want to return to the 2021 to 2024 compromise, and they argue that reopening the road wouldn't destroy the park. In a paid proponent argument, Supervisor Alan Wong wrote that "residents spend more time getting to work, taking their children to school, reaching medical appointments, and traveling across the Westside."
- Opponents say the measure would destroy the park, harm the environment and cost the city millions of dollars. Lucas Lux, president of Friends of Sunset Dunes, told the Public Press that the playground, skate park, bike park, seating and art "all of that has to go so that you can use the coast as a roadway." The official opposition argument says nearly 60% of the park's visits happen on weekdays. Environmental groups cite dune restoration and a growing population of the threatened western snowy plover. Some local businesses reported weekday sales gains of 20% to 40% since the road became a full-time park.
The Public Press also covers the background. In 2024, voters narrowly passed Proposition K, which made the road a full-time park. Citywide, 45% of voters opposed it. In District 4, which includes the park, 64% did. In its October 10 report, the Standard noted that the No on G campaign is featuring Shipwreck Cove in its Facebook and Instagram ads. Cost estimates for reopening the road differ from source to source, and the full official arguments are in the voter guide.
The calendar after November 3
The listings continue past Election Day. The November calendar from Friends of Sunset Dunes adds dune revegetation on Saturday, November 7. On Sunday, November 8, it has 2nd Sunday Serenades and a community cleanup. On Saturday, November 14, it lists another revegetation session and Zumba. All of those fall on weekends. The weekday listings will follow whatever the vote decides.
Shipwreck Cove opened in September as a one-year pilot, and the city can extend it.
